3 Types of Scrunchies

Scrunchies make an attractive and fun twist on ponytails. The popular crafting YouTube Channel Mama Project looks at how to make three types of scrunchies.

The first type is the ordinary scrunchie. Get a 55 x 10 inch section of fabric and 20 cm of elastic. Fold and sew five cm the front and edges of the fabric.

Reverse the fabric to make a tube. Use a small stick or chopstick to help reverse the fabric if your fingers are too large. Sew to make a circle. Attach the elastic band. Push the fabric forward while inserting the band, creating the scrunched-up effect. Sew the hole. Cut off any loose threads.

Pom pom scrunchies are similar to ordinary scrunchies, except you need 30 pom poms along with your fabric and elastic band. Mama Project prefers a transparent fabric to make the pom poms stand out. When you make the fabric tube, push the pom poms inside. They’ll move about as you wear the scrunchie.

The third type of scrunchie is a scrunchie with lace. You need the same materials as for an ordinary scrunchie, but with 60 cm of cotton lace. You’ll need to pin the lace to the edges of the fabric before sewing. Remove the pins as you sew.
